VIMEO FAVORITES

QUIET CITY DANCE SEQUENCE

I finally got a chance to watch Quiet City, by Aaron Katz this evening. I was thinking of posting the trailer for everyone to watch, but I thought I'd rather share one of the best scenes. A mixture of strangers and friends dancing before a party.

I enjoyed Quiet City more than other films like it (i.e. mumblecore) because I felt more of a connection to the protagonists. In Joe Swanberg's Hannah Takes the Stairs, Hannah is lost emotionally. Jaimie in Quiet City is physically lost. She arrives and the friend she is supposed to stay with isn't picking up her phone (something we can all relate to these days). Charlie has been unemployed for two months and spends his time fiddling with music. So when these two lost people start hanging out, boy it warms my heart. Warms my heart on a cold New England night. Available on DVD and friggin Netflix.

FUN WITH PHOTOGRAPHY - VOL. 1

"The carte de visite (CDV)—a paper photograph mounted on card stock measuring approximately 4 x 2.5 inches—was the most popular format for portrait photography in the nineteenth century.

CDVs were often exchanged between family and friends and were collected in specially made albums. The format became popular in the late 1850s when a technique was developed for making multiple negatives on a single glass plate and it remained popular through the 1860s.

Celebrities were a popular subject of both carte-de-visites and cabinet cards and were widely collected in the last part of the nineteenth century. Cabinet cards lost their popularity in the early 1900s and largely disappeared by the end of World War I." From the George Eastman House

MANDIBLE CHATTER

Thank god there was no arugula involved.

MINESWEEPER

I post this half because I know everyone still plays minesweeper. Half because of this mans lovely demeanor for explaining it. I also find it sad that this came up in the recommended videos for me on youtube.
