I JUST WANT TO START A FLAME IN YOUR HEART

Originally popularized by the Ink Spots, "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" has penetrated my household via the Fallout 3 commercial. This one's for you, Melissa. I guess we're turned on by post-apocalyptic video games.

CHEMICAL SHIFTS AND COUPLING CONSTANTS FOR SILICON-29

The link below will bring you to an Amazon page, selling a book called Chemical Shifts and Coupling Constants for Silicon-29. The first thing I want you to notice is the price of this book.

http://www.amazon.com/Chemical-Coupling-Constants-Silicon-29-Landolt-Bornstein/dp/354045277X/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1

While you're there, read the reviews of the book that people have left. To say the least, it is hilarious.

And I quote...
"First let me say that the book does start off a little slow but once you get into the third chapter, "Silicon Molecules: We Hardly Knew Ye'", you just can't put this book down."

JOSEF KOUDELKA SAYS "HAPPY HALLOWEEN!"

GHOSTFACE

My photo teacher Adam put paper in his 4x5 and made me a ghostface. Only if I could be a negative of myself for Halloween, that would be something. It's either that or Jodi Foster.

LIFE AS A FREE SPIRIT?

Honestly, if I could live in a place like Swiss Family Robinson, I would be there before days end. But...I think this might be the closest I actually come to achieving that dream.

Free Spirit Spheres, located on Vancouver Island, Canada.

Sure, I could rent one of the two spheres that they have set up, but this company also provides you with the ability to buy pieces to make your own sphere. The choice is between wood and fiberglass, and the difference happens to be about 100 thousand dollars. Don't ask me why wood should cost so much more, but I'll certainly take these figures into consideration when I realize that I could probably be living in suspension much sooner if I went with fiberglass.

SIP THE FAMILIAR

THE SOLUTION

WHAT?

A thirty minute infomercial bought by the Obama campaign ended ten minutes ago.

Obama & Co. bought out seven major networks for the half hour, effectively pushing back the first pitch of the entire World Series. It cost $4 million.

As Americans, these are things to concern ourselves with. Perhaps the most American of all, here was McCain's response:

BENJAMIN CARRE

I found this artist online a little while ago because a film blog I read posted about his Star Wars fan art, (two examples I liked a lot are below, Vader and the prototype for his new Tie Interceptor as seen in episode IV, and Darth Maul kicking ass against a rancor.) Then I went to his website and found a lot of gems, some of my favorites are below but not limited to so definitely check out his website for a lot more: http://www.blancfonce.com/ Click on any to see them in high-res

TUESDAY'S POSTMODERN POETRY

Recently I read something by Alice Fulton in which she talks about Frida Kahlo as one of "poetry's darlings," one of those people referred to in boring poetry, as in when authors want to make a wink at feminism.

Frida Kahlo's not so bad, but a better wink to feminism is

AN AERIAL COLLISION.

Anyhow, Fulton says it best:
'a dizzying, mind-defying beauty, with enough neural complexity to make you feel both lost and found; the head notes, heart notes, base notes; the sweat-stained. a vision through tectonic shifts. I'd like a poetry of unnatural acts. '

Here are some tectonic shifts:

PEEL-EASED TO MEET U

REDEFINING OPEN SPACES?

On my way to work in South Boston, I always pass a set of steps in Chinatown. Recently I passed these steps and they were covered in sod! This makes me go, "Hmmmm?"

When I went to the Fort Point Open Studios a few weeks ago I learned that in 2001, Boston artists Lisa Greenfield and Jennifer Moses blanketed the length of the Summer Street bridge with grass, creating a massive stretch of natural carpet. They called it
Phase One of "Redefining Open Spaces," a public art project. I'm wondering if these steps are by the same artists, or if someone else has another idea in mind. Is this public art? Or did someone just have some extra sod? It's definitely not as impressive as the original project, but it still caught my attention.

WOODEN TEETH AND ALL

I really like this coat.

"THE GREATEST HOCKEY PLAYER IN THE WORLD"

Last night I shared a cab with the greatest hockey player in the world. I was on my way home and it was a downpour outside. At a red light, a guy knocks on the window, opens the door, and says, "Can I get in? I just got locked out! You gotta let me in, I'm the greatest hockey player in the world." Ummm...Huh? He gets in soaking wet.

After some awkward introductions, we start heading to his hotel in Fenway. I don't catch his name. More awkward conversations about how we spent our nights, etc etc. He says he plays for the Penguins and he's in Boston for rehab on his ankle. I think nothing of it, who would? We reach Hotel Commonwealth, he gives me 40 bucks for the 13 dollar fare and says "Thanks, have a good night." WOWEE!

This morning I tell Greg about my 40 bucks and he looks the guy up. Turns out he IS the greatest hockey player in the world. SIDNEY CROSBY! Captain of the Penguins!

Drafted at age 19
  • Youngest player in NHL history to record 100 points in a season
  • Youngest player in NHL history to record 200 career points
  • Youngest player to be voted to the NHL All-Star Game
  • Youngest player in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy
  • Youngest player in NHL history to win the Lester B. Pearson Award
  • Youngest player in NHL history to be named to the First All-Star Team
  • Youngest player in NHL history to be named a full team captain
Out of all the hockey fans in Boston, he gets in a cab with the one person who has no idea who he is. Actually, I was more excited about getting 40 bucks than I was about meeting someone who played professional hockey.

My uncles will surely be jealous.
